October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Bullying is an agonizing problem in society, especially for high school students struggling to get through the year. The effects of bullying can be irreversible, and many students do not understand the severity of the effects of bullying on others.

Students need to be more informed about bullying and the effects of it. Bullying can come in many forms, but the most hurtful and most common form comes from students making fun of others by using hurtful words. Once words are said, they can never be taken back. The impact of being called hurtful names is enough to bring someone to a deep depression. Hurtful words have an immediate affect on people that may never be forgotten, even if they are forgiven.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) there are 4,400 deaths from suicide and is the third biggest cause of deaths among teens. For every one suicide among young people, there are at least 100 attempts. There are over 14 percent of high school students that have considered suicide, and almost 7 percent that have attempted it.

Signs that a young adult may be considering suicide include; not being engaged in activities, talking about dying, saying that the world would be better without them or joining in reckless or self-destructive behavior.

If you see such signs, report them.  Coronado, through funding from LISD, has a program called “Talk About It.” The link can be found on the left side navigation of the school website. At this website, students can report bullying or someone who may be suicidal. The reports go to the staff at Coronado, and plans are made to help these individuals. Students are encouraged to make use of the “Talk About It” program to help their friends in need of assistance.  Reports are completely anonymous and action will be taken to help the student in need.

Do not be the person that stands by, be the one to stand up. Someone’s life may depend upon it.
