Means Girls, We’ve all seen the movie, but what happens when fiction becomes reality?

When high school students become as vicious as the fictional tormentors on today’s media? Every teenager has either done wrong or had wrong done to them. Just for a minute think to yourself, have you ever said something about someone you didn’t even know? Hurt someone? Or started a rumor?

Let’s talk about it. “Talk About It” is an anonymous reporting system where troubled teens may seek advice for any problems they have, however according to a member of Coronado’s Talk About It committee, the site is nearly inactive.

Many schools across the country have adopted a phone help hotline, believing the help hotline possessed the sentimental tone and comfort an email could not give the troubled child. Also, they believed that the phone could give the students a more instant solution to their problems, according to exports. Time is key in these sorts of situations, so eliminating barriers that prevent students from getting the advice they need would be in everyone’s best interest.

Even though Coronado does not have an active phone line for those who wish to stay anonymous, there is the “Coalition for peace and justice,” a meeting after school on Tuesdays in room 413, at the coalition meetings students can sit with fellow students and talk out their problems in a judgment free and caring zone. Everyone goes through troubled times, so if support is not available at home, helps to get support from another source, whether it be a friend, from a coalition meeting or the Talk About It hotline.

The next time you call someone fat, ugly, or lame, stop, and think first. Would that hurt you? Would that make you cry? Or if someone called you fat, how would you handle it? Would you go home, and not eat for days?

So speak up, take the initiative and help. Help someone who can’t help themselves and help make Coronado a better and happier place to attend school.
