April Fool!

In the 365 days in a year we have one day that is filled with laughter and joking for lots of people, while for others it’s just another day. April fools is a day that some people look forward to because they can joke around all they want since it’s a holiday and not have other people mad at them, unless of course the joke is on them.

According to www.april-fools.us, the history of April Fool’s Day is unsure, but many think that it started around 1582 in France when New Year’s Week was moved from March 25 – April 1, to January 1. When people refused to accept this change, and continued to celebrate on April 1, they were labeled as “fools.”

 The “fools” were mocked, and sent on “fool errands.” People sent invitations to them for fake parties, and played other jokes on them. This harassment evolved over time and the custom of playing pranks on the first day of April continued.

This tradition eventually spread and was introduced to the American colonies by the English and the French. Because of this spread, April Fool’s Day has taken an international toll, with each country celebrating this holiday in its own way.

In Lubbock, April fools is a day of lots of fun and laughter. Some teachers play jokes on students, but one Tech student, Mary Katherine, 20, decided that the joke would be on her teacher.

“I wanted to make my dance teacher think I was hurt,” Katherine said. “It was easy to believe that I had sprained my ankle since I was in softball too. I went to school with my ankle wrapped and some crutches and my teacher flipped.”

There may be plenty of joking in the school, but there’s lots that goes on outside as well. CHS sophomore Brianna Burns had some of her own pranks as well.

“I called my friend and told her we had just gotten in a wreck,” Burns said. “She’s easy to fool so the joke worked out well.”

There are people though who don’t really see the point in April fools. Freshman Kaci Greer didn’t play one joke on a single person.

“I really don’t see the fun in it,” Greer said. “Everyone expects everything to be a joke so why even try?”

Though some people don’t joke around much, some love to pull funny jokes at school, work, or even by email. Next year when it’s that time of year again, don’t forget to do some research to find the ultimate prank.
