Love at First Sight: Real or Fantasy?

Pump, pum. Pump, pum. Your heartbeat could be heard from a mile away, you’re almost certain of it. Clenching, shaking, sweaty palms, you feel as if you’re about to topple over at a moment’s notice. You’ve never seen him before, but it feels as if you’ve known him forever. His laugh, his smile, his everything is all so familiar. You start to make your way to him in the crowd.
Love at first sight is believed to have originated from Cupid’s arrow piercing someone’s heart when they caught sight of someone they could possibly love. The “victim” of the shot would then fall into a seemingly endless bout of lovesickness, where the only cure was to be with the one they fell in love with. You may not agree with the story behind it, but some Coronado students do believe in the sensation.
“I believe in love at first sight because when you see that person and you notice that they have all the personality traits that you love, you just know that you would spend the rest of your life with them,” Junior Samantha Carrillo said. More Coronado students share this opinion.
Sophomore Kassie Smith agrees, “I just feel like when you just meet that certain person you know that they’re going to be the one. It’s when the first time you meet them you get butterflies, and they just make you feel special.” Seeing someone for the first time can make you have feelings for them, but is it really love?
“You meet that one person that you know you’re going to be with, to be their shoulder to cry on, and their best friend,” Sophomore Jessica Dyer continues, “It’s like nothing else matters when they’re around. You don’t care about what people think of him or her.” Another Coronado student has found that person he believes is the one.
“Yes, I believe in love at first sight because when you’re born, your heart already knows who it desires,” Nathan Hallier explains, “When you see that person, you will just know. I believe I have found that person in my girlfriend of 20 months, Ty.” A wiser member of Coronado believes, but maybe isn’t convinced.
Teacher Russell Hill says, “There’s definitely infatuation at first sight, but I’m not sure if it’s true love. I was a hopeless romantic when I was younger, always falling in love. It seems to be temporary, doesn’t seem to really last.” While these students are falling for their loves at first sight, multiple other Coronado students disagree.
“I don’t believe in love at first sight because you have to get to know the person,” Sophomore Cody Jones remarks, “You need to know a person before you can actually fall in love.”
Sophomore Isabel Rodriquez says, “I don’t believe in love at first sight because everybody judges by looks at first sight and infatuation. I think you really have to know a person to think or know you’re in love with them.” One student used to believe in love at first sight, but time has changed that.
“I used to believe because I was like every other teenage girl out there who watches ABC family movies thinking that will happen to me one day. It’s changed now that I know that love at first sight is supposed to be in fairytales, make believe. There’s no way it can be true love because you don’t know what the persons like on the inside, just the outside. You can’t have the definition of true love without knowing what’s on the inside. When you find that out, you see if it’s real or not.”
So whether it’s falling for the cute guy you see for the first time in the corner of the room, or continuing your blossoming relationship with your friend you’ve had an eye on forever, have a fun Valentine’s Day Coronado, and we wish you the best on seeing your true love fantasies come true!
