Home runs, 3-point shots, the perfect pass, taming the beast, or even straight A’s, these are some of the many visions of greatness swirling around the minds of Coronado Mustangs this year. Similar to New Year’s Resolutions, several students have made their own New School Year Resolutions, including Freshmen Alexandra Gutierrez. “I would like to make varsity softball as a freshman,” Gutierrez said, “because I love playing softball. It is something I’m good at.”

Making a varsity team as a freshman is a difficult task, but Gutierrez assured, “I’m going to put in extra hours of practice, no matter how hard it is. I’m going to push through it.” Making varsity isn’t the only sports objective atCoronadothis year, just ask Senior Lauren Dudding.

Dudding wants to accomplish many basketball related goals, including a repeat of All-State. One thing in particular stood out, “For me, I just want to achieve all the goals I achieved last year,” Dudding began, “as well as being an All-American, which is being one of the best in America in basketball. Only two other people fromCoronadohave been All-American.” While she’s on the court shooting towards this goal, other Mustangs are driven towards personal aspirations.

Sophomore Jared Lewis stated, “My goal is to make All-State Choir, because I enjoy singing and it’d be a once in a lifetime experience.” He also wants to have fun his sophomore year. Making All-State choir would give him a chance to accomplish something not everybody gets to do. Another Mustang wants to experience something out of the norm also. Sophomore Maggie Boomer has a unique aim this year.

“I want to ride a mechanical bull for 12 seconds,” Boomer said with determination, “Because I think it’d be fun, and I made a personal bet last year that I would do it before the end of sophomore year.”

When asked in disbelief how she’d achieve such a feat, Boomer jokingly proclaims, “I’m going to go to the rodeo, bring a piece of rope, and tie myself to the bull.”

Contrary to needing rope to complete her objectives, Kristen Unrein, Senior, has an academic view in sight. Unrein said, “I want to graduate in the top ten percent and improve my skills of drafting in my engineering class. I want to get intoHonorsCollege, and for that, I have to be in the top ten percent.” She has her eyes set on Texas Tech, where she plans on majoring in engineering.

If she accomplishes this desire, Unrein declares, “I’ll feel like all that I’ve worked for will finally pay off, because what I’ve worked for since I was little is to get a good education and go to college. I’ll be able to start my life.”

So whether it is an academic, sports-related, or a personal goal, good luck Mustangs, we hope you achieve your dreams and all your “New School Year Resolutions” make it into the record books.
