The Legacy Event Center in downtown Lubbock was the scene Saturday night as the Coronado Student Council and the Coalition for Peace and Justice sponsored the first all school dance in many years for the Coronado student body.

Faculty sponsors Ms. Miraglia, Ms. Conley and Mr. Chamberlain all thought the dance was a great hit.

“We had about 300 students show up,” Chamberlain said.  “We sold over 70 tickets at the door.”

Students began showing up at the center with their dates, and some without dates, about 7:00.  Although the dance officially started at 7:30.  Ms. Conley, who is the junior class sponsor and manages the Prom each year, helped to arrange the DJ for the night and assisted with other details.  Mr. Chamberlain and CHS Counselor Ms. Brown worked the door taking and selling tickets.  Ms. Miraglia and Mr. Rodriquez served the punch and cookies.

Students were treated to a wide range of music including rap, hip hop, country, pop and even a few oldies.  Most students were shy of the dance floor at the beginning, but when the Cha Cha Slide was played, all students hit the dance floor and stayed there for the majority of the night.  When the evening ended at 11 PM, the students all gathered in the center of the dance floor and sang the school alma mater.

The dance originated as an idea from a meeting of the Coronado Coalition for Peace and Justice, the anti-bullying club.  With the additional help of student council, the plans for the dance began to take shape in early January.  For an added twist, the dance was advertised as a “Sadie Hawkins” dance, in which the girls ask the guys to the dance. The event was a great time according to the sponsors and will most likely lead to additional dances in the future.
