Bells, bells, bells, they’re everywhere. Ribbons fall from a flower like a waterfall of red, gold, and white. Streamers lace the halls of Coronado High School, as students show their school spirit with mums and garters; like a tribe of natives they chant and scream ready for battle. Odessa High had no clue what they were in for when they arrived in Lubbock that day.
The stands of Lowery Field flourished with people of every age, either attending Coronado now, or returning. Ladies in long dresses awaited the answer to the long asked question, “Who’s the homecoming queen?”
After much anticipation, golf carts carried the homecoming court and their escorts to the middle of the field. Eric Honesto, Coronado’s 2012 homecoming king, stood to the left with a bouquet of beautiful flowers. The candidates were announced and the crowd was informed about the organizations they attended and what their plan was for after high school. Finally Coronado’s principal, Mr. Akin, broke the silence: “And your 2012 homecoming queen is, Sydney Webster.”
The crowd erupted with cheers and excitement as Eric made his way to hand Webster the roses. The excitement of the royals died down but another one soon surfaced as people realized it was only half time.
Touchdown after touchdown, the excitement grew and although Odessa played well, in the end Coronado played better. Coronado won 21-9 in the end.
