We have many traditions here at Coronado.  One of these traditions is that there are always a number of our students that choose to enter the United States Armed Forces upon graduation.  This school year is no exception with at least seven of our May graduates planning to serve their country in our military services and several others that will be doing active service upon graduation from college.

 We know that it takes a lot of courage and determination to decide at such an early age to make such a major life decision.  We decided to talk to a few of them and ask them how they made their decision and why they chose their particular branch of service.

 Coronado senior Justin Perez has chosen the U. S. Air Force for his military service and hopes to serve in security.  He plans to be in basic training by August.  Perez believes he found a branch that fits what he wants from an armed service.

“The other branches simply did not have what I was looking for,” Perez said.  “I do not want to be on the front lines. The Air Force had all the aspects of what I was looking for.” 

Perez hopes to gain self confidence and believes that his Air Force experience will aid him in becoming a police officer or security officer when he leaves the military.

Also headed to the Air Force is Ryan Gallegos, our CHS Mascot.   His plan is to first complete his degree at Texas Tech University, then enlist in the Air Force.  He was attracted to this branch because of their specific use of technology. 

“I like their advancement in technology,” he said. “The other branches always come to the Air Force when they need something and I want to be able to help out in this way.” 

Gallegos believes that protecting and serving the people of the United States is a noble venture. 

“It’s something that I desire and will be very proud of in my later years,” he said.

 Gallegos hopes that his time in service to his country will develop his self-esteem and bring him knowledge, integrity, honor and great experiences.

 The U.S. Navy was the branch of service chosen by Coronado senior James Gore. Gore’s reasons for selecting the Navy are based on family tradition. 

“My grandfather was a gunner for the Navy, I want to follow him and serve and protect my country,” Gore said. “I want to make him proud and be able to say that I helped maintain the freedom of the United States.” 

Gore is eager to gain job experience for many types of jobs and weaponry in the Navy.  He said his decision was not as hard of a decision as it might have been for others.

 “My decision was very easy because there are a plethora of opportunities and more secure promises for my future,” Gore said.

CHS senior Joel Luman,  has chosen to enter The Army.  He plans to serve as an infantryman just as his grandfather and his Dad before him did.  He said he wants to follow in their footsteps and keep alive the family tradition of Army service. 

“I want to honor my Dad and grandfather by serving as they did,” he said.  “I believe that the many opportunities in The Army will help me to get a successful start to life.”

There’s no doubt that Coronado is full of students who have shown to be fearless and are willing to go after what they want to do in life.

The common theme in all of the stories of Coronado seniors headed into military service is a desire to serve their country and continue the family tradition.  It is a difficult time to serve in the military and we here at Coronado are very proud of our “Mustang soldiers” and wish them the best of luck in their new endeavors.
